A City That Grew Up on Berry Farms
The first settlers came to Bellevue in 1869, and by 1882 it was a small logging and homestead community. In the early 1900s, Japanese immigrant farmers cleared much of the land and grew crops on small leased plots. The Bellevue Strawberry Festival began in 1925, and by the 1930s it drew as many as 15,000 visitors. The festival was canceled in 1942, when the Japanese American families who made up most of the farm workforce were interned during World War II. Afterward, a lot of farmland opened up for development. Bellevue became a city in 1953, and it later added Crossroads in 1964 and Lake Hills in 1969.
