Luke McRedmond filed a homestead claim beside the Sammamish Slough in 1870. The settlement was first called Salmonberg for its salmon, then Melrose. In 1883, McRedmond asked for the name Redmond. The town incorporated in 1912 with about 300 people. Redmond Derby Days began in 1939 as a bicycle race, and the city still has the state's only velodrome. Microsoft moved its headquarters here in 1986, Redmond Town Center opened in 1997, and light rail reached Downtown Redmond in May 2025. Marymoor Park covers 560 acres and hosts a summer concert series.
