From a Steel Mill Dream to a Lakefront City
British-born businessman Peter Kirk came to Washington in 1886 to grow his family's steel business. He wanted a town by the water, and he bought land in what is now downtown in 1888. His steel mill was finished on Rose Hill in 1892, but the Panic of 1893 closed it before it made any steel. Kirkland still became a city in 1905. Ferries crossed Lake Washington until the floating bridge opened in 1940, and the Lake Washington Shipyard, now Carillon Point, built warships. Today the Cross Kirkland Corridor trail runs through the city, and Juanita Beach Park is a popular spot on the lake.
