Surveyors found coal along Coal Creek in 1863, and a settlement was named Newcastle in 1869, borrowing the old saying "coals to Newcastle." The mine was producing by the 1870s and closed in 1963 after more than 13 million tons of coal. In 1878, the Seattle and Walla Walla Railroad reached Newcastle, the first railroad in King County. Chinese laborers who worked the mines are remembered in names like Coal Creek Parkway and the China Creek golf course. In the 1960s, suburban homes went up under the name Newport Hills, and Newcastle became a city on September 30, 1994.
